The reddish nut carved as a standing man in a cap and cape, inserting his left hand into his pocket,
the interior long jacket with three bone buttons,
his face with amusing bulging and lopsided two-colour glass eyes,
the back side of the cape forming a long hinged lid to the snuff opening,
the cape interior bearing label :
By Appointment to His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales
Antique Dealer and Restorer Rogers De Rin, London
Condition : Very good; the back cover doesn't shut tightly due to natural shrinkage;
a few expected shrinkage splits;
one foot reglued
NOTE :
The coquilla nut emanates from swampy areas on the eastern side of South America,
from a palm known as the "attalea funiefera". Brazilians call it "Piassabe".
The nuts were introduced into Western Europe in the mid-16th century,
and used for small carved objects until the end of the 19th century.
For a discussion on coquilla nuts, see Pinto, Treen and Other Wooden Bygones,
pp 194-6, and Plates 250 -207.
